ARTIST’S STATEMENT / Wes Bogner  2009

I have always enjoyed the outdoors. I was taught to canoe, camp and fish by my father. Fishing has taken me to beautiful places, created some of my best memories, provided meals and campfire camaraderie I still share.  In Oregon salt and freshwater fish territories combine to create a wide spectrum of colors, tastes and habitats to explore. The Oregon landscape is rich in substantial visual material and fresh fish dinners. Last year I began resampling Fish Tales; a conceptual series I created 30 years ago. Elements of reality are metaphorically juxtaposed with the absurd creating an artistic satire of humanity.  In a fish-eat-fish world it doesn’t matter if you’re a vegetarian.

The flexibility of the digital process allows me to explore many alternative approaches to image design immediately. Mutations of color and composition quickly generate ideas for solving spatial and textural challenges.  ‘You don’t have to wait for the paint to dry’ in other words to know if you like the color. While trained in traditional visual arts media; [Lithography, Serigraphy, Intaglio & Painting], I experimented freely in the past, combining various construction and art materials in both 2- and 3-dimensional forms. I still continue this multi-media approach to my work, incorporating new digital technologies with contemporary painting methods. I often use photographic sources coupled with inspiration and experiential knowledge to achieve my visual goals.

Fish Tales by Wes Bogner is a series of artworks using aquatic themes containing fish comedy while employing visual puns and word play. I enjoy provoking thought as well as laughter. I have found Fish are the perfect vehicle for expressing some part of my inherent particular and perhaps warped view of the world.
